Bitesize 31 - Firestarters + Outdoor Kitchens
There’s something about barbequing meat and vegetables that’s indescribably satisfying. Even people who cannot otherwise cook in a regular kitchen love cooking outdoors. Provided there’s a good gas grill involved. If you’re a “firestarter” (barbeque chef) yourself, you might lament those times of year when you can’t barbeque outside. Or you could opt for a full outdoor kitchen, which seems to be a big trend right now, especially on the West Coast of the USA, where several states have more moderate winters.
We’re not talking about an old brick barbeque pit but an all-out kitchen complete with grills, countertops, cabinets and drawers, sinks and at least one fridge. Some people are even adding pizza ovens and bartending centers.
A few homeowners are even adding fireplaces, cabanas with a bath and other accessories. Of course, this requires that pipes are properly treated for cold weather. Estimates are $50-55K for an outdoor kitchen, including plumbing, electrical and other elements. Not exactly roughing it outdoors.
That kind of price is out of range for most homeowners, so an alternative is a DIY (do-it-yourself) project. Being organized is key if you want to the general contractor for your own construction projects. Keep in mind that in most states and provinces, for insurance purposes, you need a qualified electrician and plumber to check your work.
The DIY Network has instructions for building a few of the elements of an outdoor kitchen. You’ll find additional tips and instructions at This Old House and HomeTips. Werever is a maker of outdoor kitchens and cabinets that have been weatherproofed. Efunctional Outdoor Kitchen Distributors sell a wide range of high-end grill brands, patio furniture, and other accessories for outdoor kitchens. Outdoor Kitchen Concepts has a variety of cabinets and accessories, and has downloadable catalogs, pricelist, and even a design worksheet (all in Adobe PDF format).
If you’re a bit hesitant to manage your own outdoor kitchen project, you may want to read the weblog of a couple who remodeled their kitchen. It’s not about outdoor kitchens, but it may give you some valuable pointers. [found via the Miami Herald] The site includes before and after photos, videos, and their “homeowner’s toolbox”.
Whatever you decide regarding your kitchen, please promise me that you’ll go gas instead of electric.
