Mango Lassi - Party Snack Recipe

Mango Lassi (aka “lushy”) is an East Indian drink that is associated with hot days. But this cool, soothing drink is also great for cooling the heat on your tongue, when you’re eating spicy food - something I find myself doing a lot during the winter months :)

The traditional drink has both a salty and sweet variation, and there are other little variations, including adding pomegranate or other seeds for texture. The lassi recipe given here - very simple, by the way - is of the sweet variety. If you’re not a teetotaller, you can add a variety of liquors to the mix, including vodka, gin, or white rum. If you’re using vodka, try lemon or orange vodka. You’ll have to play with proportions until you get something you like.

Ingredients and Preparation:

  • Place 1 cup of ice cubes or crushed ice in a blender.
  • Add 1 cup of cubed mango pieces. You can substitute mango juice if fresh, ripe mango is not available.
  • Add 1.5-2 cups of plain yogurt or buttermilk (preferred).
  • Add 1-2 tbsp of sugar or honey, to taste.
  • If you are using liquor, add it now. (Keep in mind that if you are serving individual cocktails, that you probably don’t want more than 2 ounces of alcohol for every 6 ounces of mixer.)
  • Depending on the strength of your blender, grind, mix, then puree all the ingredients until you get a smooth result that’s not too thick.
  • Taste a spoonful of the drink, adding more sweetening as necessary.
Bottoms up!
