Tidbits - How To Remove A Turmeric Stain From A Shirt

One reader was recently looking for a way to remove turmeric stains from a shirt.

If the shirt is white, you can soak the stain in a mixture of bleach and water. But the effectiveness of this method depends on how soon you catch the stain after it happens.

Otherwise, my experience has always been that it’s not possible to completely remove turmeric stains through regular cleaning. Again, if you catch the stain early enough, you could try soaking the stain in a paste made of baking soda and water.

What might be more effective is to soak the stain in soda water, as it is a bit more active than dry baking soda. Do not, however, use tonic water or soda pop. Soda pop drinks have too much sugar in them and are not very effective. I once tried removing turmeric with ginger ale and just made things worse, over a larger area of the shirt.

Finally, one trick that clothes designers have used in the past is to bleach the shirt, then dye it a dark color (blue or black), or even tie-die it psychedelic colours.
